Sacrifice: Sky for a Night in the Car: Day 23

6 July

The Isle of Skye was EVERYTHING and MORE that we thought it would be...Mountains, rivers, bays, forests, ancient ruins, druid stones, old cemeteries, and good food. (It's all about the food sometimes). But, really, we needed two weeks here in Skye to attempt to do all that we wanted to do.

We had a great breakfast at Mrs. Boyd's: full Scottish breakfast with smoked salmon and wonderful coffee and were very thankful for the opportunity to stay at her home. Saying our good-byes, we headed into town to grab a donut at Mackenzie's Bakery where the women still wore the little caps on their heads. We tossedd the donuts into the care for later and shopped in the town a little and as we were leaving two young boys came with their bagpipes in full kilted garb and began to play in the square. Ah Scotland...we love your bagpipes! We got into the car and Mackenzie said, "Where are the donuts I know I put them in my seat..." Yep, you guessed it...she sat on the donuts! Seriously though, smashed jelley donuts are the best!

We set out on the narrow roads and completed the the east of Skye and then we traveled to Dunvegan Castle, but with a 11 euro entry fee, we just peeked inside the gate, used the toilet at the gift shop and headed on, stopping to explore any old ruins and cemeteries we came upon. Next stop, Talisker Distillery, the only one on the island, but the tour was 8 euro so you know we didn't go on it. But, each of us could try 2 wee tastes of two of their scotches for free and FREE is our favorite word during this trip. We couldn't afford to buy any of the scotches which ranged from 50-2000 euros...so bye!

What we really wanted to do was the FAIRY POOLS! I love the Heritage of Scotland Facebook page and first saw the fairy pools there three years ago when Jim ordered his wedding garbs from the Heritage of Scotland Company. The only trouble was...time! It was about 3:00 pm and we knew we would stay about 2 hours at the pools and we had a 4 hour drive to Glasgow and we still wanted to do more! Oh well...off we went to the fairy pools. What a great time we had. We walked half the time in the rain and half of the time in the sunshine AND we got into the fairy pools! We didn't swim, but definitely waded in the water (Mackenzie even got bitten by a fairy...okay, maybe it was a spider, but a fairy sounds so much more exciting! Look on the website to see more about this magical place: http://www.isleofskye.com/skye-guide/top-ten-skye-walks/fairy-pools

Okay, so now it was about 5:30 and we still had to get off Skye and we wanted to see another castle that looked like the one in 'Skyfall' (you know, the James Bond movie with Daniel Craig). It's called Eilean Donan Castle. We got there about 6:30 and it was closed, but the gates were opened so we walked around the castle anyway.

And now it was time to head to Glasgow because our plane to Dublin was scheduled to leave the next morning at 11:30 a.m. Trouble is the rain! Lots of rain and those nearly single lane roads were horrible. We drove till about 10:00 and stopped at 3 different hotels and they were all booked so we stayed at the Loch Lomond Auto Park...also known as...OUR CAR! Seriously, we pulled over at 11:30 in a parking area, put our seats back and zonked out!

Tip of the Day: Fairies Bite!

Happy Birthday to my brother, Mark!

Peace,

The Traveling Women
